The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died of the water, because it was made bitter. Rev. 8:11
This star’s name is which means a poisonous root. Wormwood is always figuratively used in the Bible. It refers to bitter things and perverted justice.
Wormwood is the result of idolatry.
O you who turn justice to wormwood, and cast down righteousness to the earth! Am 5:7
Chastisement
. . . and you have seen their detestable things, their idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold, which were among them. 18 Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away this day from the LORD our God to go and serve the gods of those nations; lest there be among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit, Deut 29:17-18
Bitterness
. . . but have stubbornly followed their own hearts and have gone after the Baals, as their fathers taught them. 15 Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will feed this people with wormwood, and give them poisonous water to drink. Jer 9:14-15;

Fornication
For the lips of a loose woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. Prov 5:3-4.
False religion is always represented by a loose woman. This falling wormwood heralds the coming to power of false faith. There is nothing more bitter than those who lead the people to destruction. Jeremiah speaks of his great bitterness that the people would not listen to him, and escape from the judgment that comes upon them for their prostituted faith.
He has filled me with bitterness, he has sated me with wormwood. Lam. 3:15
Remember my affliction and my bitterness, the wormwood and the gall! Lam. 3:19
The rise of the Papacy is just such a wormwood.
In 533 Emperor Justinian decreed that the Bishop of Rome was HEAD OF ALL THE HOLY CHURCHES, AND OF ALL THE HOLY PRIESTS. The Pope took over the Western Empire and the bitterness of work, penitence, idolatry, and false miracles destroyed many a soul.
